Republican Georgia Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene slammed Ukraine as anti-democratic for canceling elections till a conclusion is reached in the ongoing war against Russia.

“The democracy of Ukraine is canceling their elections until after the war is over. The lovers and defenders of democracy fund war in Ukraine. Nothing more Democratic than meddling with and canceling elections,” MTG said.

Needless to say, Greene’s tweet was met with a number of negative reactions. Here are some of them:

Greene’s tweet came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said in an interview with BBC that Ukrainian elections will be held next year only if martial law is ended by then. While the country is under martial law, no elections can be held, Zelenskyy said, in keeping with the Ukrainian constitution.

He did pray for peace in Ukraine next year and for life in the country to return to normal. The next parliamentary elections in the country are scheduled to be held in October 2023, while presidential ones should take place in the spring of 2024.

Zelenskyy’s declaration was echoed by the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk, who said that parliamentary elections were not on the agenda as they could not be held during martial law.

Zelenskyy also held meetings with President Joe Biden to discuss “the course of hostilities and the processes taking place in Russia” among other things. Over the weekend, the world watched in shock as the Russian mercenary group Wagner, along with its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, launched an armed rebellion against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Moscow, which was ultimately short-lived.

Moscow announced on Saturday that it had reached a deal with Prigozhin, who had been a critique of Russia’s military leadership. “Yesterday’s events exposed the weakness of Putin’s regime,” the Ukrainian president said.
