In the early hours of Wednesday, Herzl-Ner Tamid synagogue on Mercer Island fell victim to an act of vandalism, marked by the appearance of anti-Israel graffiti, as disclosed by officials. The defacement involved several spray-painted expressions tied to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, a confrontation that has persisted since October 7. The Mercer Island Police Department promptly intervened upon receiving notifications from members of the synagogue.
Responsibility for the investigation has been transferred to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with Lindsey Tusing, a spokesperson for the Police Department, confirming their leading role in the case. This incident unfolds against the backdrop of the FBI’s ongoing inquiry into suspicious packages directed at Jewish organizations in the Seattle area. Notably, Mercer Island has reported two instances within the past week.
Expressing her dismay at the vandalism, U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal shared her sentiments, emphasizing the significance of Herzl-Ner Tamid synagogue and its congregation in the local community. She conveyed her solidarity, stating, “This synagogue and its congregation are so important to our community, and my heart is with them. We must continue to condemn rising hatred wherever we see it.”
