A man in North Carolina was charged for threatening US President Joe Biden, after he was arrested on February 5, the Department of Justice said on Thursday. David Kyle Reeves, 27, was unsealed in federal court on Thursday, which said the man knowingly and willfully made threats to take the life of and inflict body harm upon Biden, according to the court documents, reports CNN.

Reeves, charged with threatening Biden, can face a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The 27-year-old had contacted the White House switchboard via telephone multiple times from January 28 to February 1, reports CNN, and made threats against the US President and others, according to the affidavit filed in court.

The North Carolina man has allegedly said that he was going to kill everyone and ‘chop your heads off,’ says the criminal complaint, which also says that Reeves was contacted by a Secret Service agent to discuss the threats, reports CNN.

The 27-year-old had called the agent many a time throughout the day when he made threats against Biden, the agent, and others, the CNN report says.

According to the affidavit filed in support of criminal complaint against Reeves, the 27-year-old told the agent he did nothing wrong as “he had free speech.”

A US Magistrate Judge has ordered Reeves to remain in custody, the Justice Department said on Thursday after the court hearing.
