Law enforcement is dealing with a barricaded suspect inside a house on Prospect Avenue after a police officer was shot on Friday evening in Oxford, said Oxford Police Chief Pat Ford and Granville County Sheriff Robert Fountain Jr.
The is a heavy police presence around the home, which is near Granville Medical Center off Route 15 in Oxford. The hospital is on lockdown. “There is no threat to patients, staff, or visitors at the hospital. No idea when it may be lifted,” Alfred Leach said.

According to a report by ABC11, authorities issued a safety advisory for residents that Oxford Police were at the scene of an active shooter incident near Prospect Avenue and Delacroix Street. Residents have been advised to remain inside and lock their doors and windows.

The Durham Police SWAT is also present on the scene.
Authorities could not confirm the extent of injuries the officer suffered after the shooting. He was sitting inside an SUV when he was shot. Reportedly, he sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The patrol vehicle of another police officer was shot up, but no one was injured.

The suspect fired several rounds and vowed not to be taken alive.
Staff members at the Southern Snow Company, an ice cream shop nearby, said that they heard shots fired, reported ABC11.

Customers reported hearing the shooter loading and unloading constantly during the incident. The ice cream shop was shut down as soon as the shooting started. Staffers and customers remained locked inside the shop.
Neighbors said the shooter had no history of violent behavior and lives alone.

“We have faith in our first responders that they will be able to get the situation under control, and we pray without additional injury. We ask that all concerned keep those who are responding in their thoughts and pray for a peaceful resolution,” Oxford Mayor Jackie Sergent said in a statement released on Friday night.

Oxford Police, Granville County Sheriff’s Office, Wake Forest PD, Wake EMS, Raleigh Police, and Highway Patrol are all present on the scene.
