As part of the ongoing investigation into the Gilgo Beach serial murder suspect Rex Heuermann, a storage facility on Long Island was searched yesterday.

According to News12 Long Island, authorities searched one unit at the Omega Self Storage facility in Amityville under the authority of a search order “in connection with the Gilgo suspect case.” Heuermann, 59, spent his entire life in Massapequa Park, which is a neighborhood of Amityville.

Heuermann’s house, where he has lived since the 1980s, is still being searched by the same investigating teams. Since his arrest on Thursday night, his wife, Asa Ellerup, and their adult children have not been heard from.

Heuermann is currently charged with killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. He is also being investigated for the murders of the other six women whose remains were discovered in 2011 and is the main suspect in the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

Heuermann was arrested by police on Thursday night out of concern that he might commit another crime. According to them, he continued to support sex workers “at all hours of the night” and was using burner phones to hide his identity.

A New York state trooper discovered Heuermann’s identity registered to a first-generation Chevrolet Avalanche last year. This vehicle matched the description provided by a witness to Amber Costello’s abduction, and it provided the first significant lead in the investigation.

Additionally, physically, he matched the witness’s description of the man Amber had been spotted with. Heuermann didn’t try to conceal his ownership of the car, nor did he reside far from Costello.

According to court documents, the pimp of murdered sex worker Amber Costello told authorities that her killer was a big, Caucasian male in his mid-40s, standing at 6 feet 4 or 6 feet 6, with dark, bushy hair, and glasses that looked “like an ogre.”
