A group of about 200 people calling themselves the Parents’ Rights Group is making an attempt to enter the Los Angeles Unified School District in downtown Los Angeles, California.

Conflicts with police wearing riot gear are occurring as a result of opposition from anti-LGBT campaigners and other demonstrators. Fighting broke out, resulting in multiple arrests, so the police decided to keep things under control and declared this to be an illegal assembly. Law enforcement is trying to control the altercations between various factions, so things are still tight.

A group of parents and supporters wearing “leave our kids alone” t-shirts came across a counter-demonstration of LGBTQ+ allies wearing rainbow clothing today in downtown Los Angeles. The altercation is a reflection of the continuous discussion on gender and sexual identity curricula in schools.

For a “Parental Rights Rally,” a coalition of conservative community organizations planned a march from Los Angeles City Hall to the Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters, which was located a few streets away. Their main demand was for parents to have more authority over the LGBTQ education their kids receive.

Their discomfort was directed at California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has supported legislation requiring the inclusion of LGBT subjects in the curriculum and defending children’s rights to self-identify their sexual orientation, as well as the school district, which encourages acceptance of all gender and sexual identities.

LGBTQ+ allies and employees of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) came together for a smaller counterprotest at City Hall to support inclusivity and show support for the district’s approach to teaching students to embrace diversity in race, gender, and sexual identity.

Skye Tooley, a transgender elementary school teacher employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District, was present at the counter-protest. In an attempt to refute the arguments made by the conservative demonstrators, Tooley underlined the significance of their attendance that day.
