A Purdue University student from Indianapolis was killed in a homicide at an on-campus residence hall on Wednesday.

According to a university representative, McCutcheon Hall called 911 at 12:44 a.m. on Wednesday, which was received by the Purdue University Police Department.

The victim’s roommate is a suspect who is being held after making the call. The university spokeswoman claimed that there is no danger to the local neighbourhood. Varun Manish Chheda, a 20-year-old Indianapolis resident, was the victim, according to the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office.

A spokesperson for the Purdue Campus Police Department declined to provide any details about the incident’s circumstances and instead directed questions to university representatives.

“This is as tragic an event on our campus as we can imagine, and our hearts and thoughts are with all of those affected by this terrible event,” Purdue University President Mitch Daniels said in a statement sent to students and staff Wednesday morning. The homicide investigation is still ongoing.

According to the Purdue statement, there is no threat to the community. Although the residence has not been identified, there has been police activity at McCutcheon this morning.

According to a first-floor McCutcheon resident, the incident occurred on his floor, which is currently taped off with blue tape. Residents have not received information from officials, he claims, as per Purdue Exponent.

Purdue’s campus is located in West Lafayette, near the western bank of the Wabash River, which divides the larger city of Lafayette. State Street, which runs parallel to State Road 26, separates the northern and southern parts of campus.

Academic buildings dominate the eastern and southern hemispheres of campus, with residence halls and intramural fields to the west and athletic facilities to the north. The Greater Lafayette Public Transportation Corporation (CityBus) runs eight campus loop bus routes that students, faculty, and staff can use for free with their Purdue ID.
