“Say his name…say it loud” were the words said by George Floyd‘s family with their fists up in the air after meeting US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in the White House on Tuesday, to mark the one year death anniversary of Floyd’s murder.

The meeting was attended by most of Floyd’s family, including daughter Giana, brothers Rodney and Terrence.

However, Floyd’s sister Bridgett decided to skip the meeting with Biden and Harris and stayed back in Minneapolis to attend a rally for her brother and because Biden “broke his promise” in passing legislation aiming for police reforms in the country, reported BBC.

After the private meeting with the President and Vice President, the family took the stage and urged or “federal laws to protect people of colour.”

Philonise, Floyd’s brother, said in a statement after the meeting, “If you can make federal laws to protect the bird, the bald eagle, you can make federal laws to protect people of colour”, reported AFP.

Biden also gave a statement after the meeting and said, “His (George Floyd) murder launched a summer of protest we hadn’t seen since the Civil Rights era in the ’60s — protests that peacefully unified people of every race and generation to collectively say enough of the senseless killings”, reported AFP.

The city of Minneapolis, earlier on Tuesday, observed a moment of silence to honour the memory of George Floyd. The gesture was joined by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and the Mayor.

Similar gestures were carried out in the state of New York, while a rally was organised in Los Angeles to pay respect to Floyd on his death anniversary.
