Russian film studio, Non-Stop Production, which produced Oscar-nominated ‘Leviathan’, on Monday announced a new true-crime television series, which would be the first in Russia to be co-produced in collaboration with US platform.

Alexander Rodnyansky, the head of the Non-Stop Production company stated, “We are launching the first co-production in Russia with the US streaming platform Topic.” 

Titled ‘Frozen Land,’ the eight part series, will be based on the true story of Dmitry Lebed, a serial killer who was jailed in 2019, for murder and rape of at least 11 young women.

Rodnyansky added the story would be told through the eyes of a “woman who loved him and couldn’t believe in his guilt.”

Scheduled for release in 2022, the show will be directed by Valeriya Gia Germanika. Germanika skyrocketed to the limelight when her first feature film ‘Everybody Dies But Me’ received a special mention in the Camera d’Or nomination at Cannes.

Non-Stop Production Company has been instrumental in making several films by acclaimed Russian filmmaker Andrei Zvyagintsev.

Zvyagintsev’s ‘Leviathan’, which was also produced by the company, had received the Best Screenplay award at the 2014 Cannes film festival, besides winning a Golden globe and being nominated for an Academy Award.

The increasing popularity of OTT platforms both in Russia and around the world has been further fueled by the coronavirus-induced lockdown, and several new companies in the US and Canada have now entered the streaming services market.
