Senator Dianne Feinstein’s office on Thursday told CNN that the California Democrat had health complications – Ramsay Hunt syndrome and encephalitis – following her shingles diagnosis.

A spokesperson from Feinstein’s office told CNN that her complications included ‘Ramsay Hunt syndrome and encephalitis’.

“While the encephalitis resolved itself shortly after she was released from the hospital in March, she continues to have complications from Ramsay Hunt syndrome,” the spokesperson added.

The 89-year-old Senator – the oldest in US history – returned to the Senate last week. She was absent for roughly three months. She is recovering from Shingles.

There have been calls to replace her. She had asked Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer to temporarily replace her on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Republicans blocked the request last month.

Post-shingles encephalitis symptoms include headache, fever and sensitivity to light. It also affects memory, language and other cognitive skills. Ramsay Hunt syndrome is when shingles affect the facial nerve near the ear. It causes paralysis and hearing loss.

The California lawmaker on Thursday told CNN that she did not have encephalitis. She was first elected to the Senate in 1992.

“I’m back in Washington, voting and attending committee meetings while I recover from complications related to a shingles diagnosis,” Feinstein said in a statement on Thursday to the New York Times.

“I continue to work and get results for California.”

Feinstein’s return gives Democrats a cushion at the 51-49 majority.
