Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming said on Sunday he will back Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski for re-election soon after former President Donald Trump announced that he would be campaigning against her.

Barrasso said on NBC’s “Meet The Press” of the 2022 midterm elections, “I want to always make sure we nominate somebody who can win in November. Lisa Murkowski knows Alaska better than anybody, and she’s an incredible fighter for American energy.” Senator Lisa has held her seat since 2002.

The No. 3 Senate Republican also said that Murkowski has not yet announced that she will be running for reelection. Barrasso made it clear that “if she does, I’m going to support her,” reported Politico.

On Saturday, Trump declared that he would not be endorsing Murkowski “under any circumstances.”

“I will not be endorsing, under any circumstances, the failed candidate from the great State of Alaska, Lisa Murkowski. (Murkowski’s) vote to advance radical left democrat (sic) Deb Haaland for Secretary of the Interior is yet another example of Murkowski not standing up for Alaska,” Trump said in a statement to Politico.

Senator Murkowski is one of the seven Republicans who voted for Trump to be convicted during his second impeachment. Out of these seven, she is the only one who may run for the mid-term elections.

Even during his term, Murkowski was one of the few Republicans who were vocal about their dissatisfaction with Trump’s decisions and work. This made her a common target for Trump.

Elaborating further, Barrasso said he will also support Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney who also broke off from the party to impeach him earlier in the year.

“I support her,” he said Sunday but made sure to specify that he “disagrees with her completely on the issue of impeachment.”
