A man was killed in a shooting in Smithtown Avenue of Bohemia on Wednesday, police told News 12. The shooting happened at 6:35 AM at a home on Smithtown Avenue, the report said citing authorities.

Police say that a 49-year-old adult male was shot in his backyard while he was smoking a cigarette. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison says that the suspect could be two people with a shotgun or a long rifle.

Harrison added that the man tried to crawl into his home after he was shot but died immediately after he was inside. He had three daughters who were inside the home when the incident happened.

A large police presence was seen near the Sayville Motor Lodge, News 12 reported. Harrison said that the suspects have left the scene in a car but they do not have the description of it yet. He further added that the investigation of the incident is at the preliminary stages and it is not possible to determine if it was targetted. 

Reza Kolahifar, the assistant superintendent for administration and personnel at the Connetquot Central School District, updated parents about the scene that took place half a mile away from the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School.

“We have been assured by our security department and Suffolk County Police Department that this is an isolated incident, and there is no threat to students or staff at Bosti Elementary School,” Kolahifar said.
