Baltimore police detained a 17-year-old teen on Friday morning in connection with a mass shooting that took place on Sunday.

The incident claimed the lives of two people and left 28 others injured. The police initially had at least two suspects on the hunt, and they haven’t ruled out the possibility of more shooters.

According to a statement from the police, the suspect was arrested by members of the homicide and SWAT teams at 7:00 a.m. The 17-year-old is facing charges that include possession of a firearm by a minor, reckless endangerment, and other related offenses.

As per media reports, the shootings occurred shortly after midnight at Brooklyn Homes in South Baltimore. The suspect allegedly opened fire during an annual block party in the neighborhood. As per police records, the majority of those injured in the shooting were teenagers and young adults. The two individuals who lost their lives have been identified as 20-year-old Kylis Fagbemi and 18-year-old Aaliyah Gonzalez.

The location of the teen’s arrest or any other identifying information has not been disclosed by the police.

In a statement on Friday, Mayor Brandon M. Scott said that the city’s top priority is to ensure that the individuals responsible for the crime are brought to justice. He also expressed appreciation to those who played a role in capturing the suspect. He said that the arrest made today is a sign that Aaliyah, Kylis, and all those impacted by this horrible incident can receive justice with the help of the community.

During a press conference on Monday, Baltimore’s acting police commissioner, Richard Worley, revealed that the department had only learned of the party’s existence a few hours before the shooting occurred. The shooting took place shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Worley also stated that multiple firearms were involved in the incident.
