Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has a big lead in the national polls, but the race is not over yet. In order to win the White House, he needs 270 Electoral College votes. So, let’s take a look at Biden’s most likely roads to victory:

The six big swing states: Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina, Arizona

Biden can simply win the electoral majority by carrying Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, where President Donald Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016. Notably, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin were the places that Democrats carried for years but was painted red in the last election.

If Biden wins here along with the states Clinton won four years ago, he will have 279 electoral votes in hand. According to The Associated Press, the 77-year-old former Vice President has already spent nearly $150 million for his campaign here.

Florida and North Carolina are the rightmost swing states. However, the latter appears tighter in the race this time. In 2008, Barack Obama was the first Democrat to take North Carolina in 32 years, which sort of boost Biden’s chances.

Biden could reach his own magic number by winning Florida, plus any one of the remaining five states in this group if he has no surprise losses anywhere else.

As far as Arizona is concerned, it has voted for Republicans for decades but is swinging for Democrats in recent years. The middle ground is currently giving a lead to Biden.

The states that are on Trump’s side: Ohio, Iowa, Georgia, and Texas

If Biden surprisingly wins in these states, that means he will win big. In 2016, Trump won all these states by a big margin. Biden made two stops in Georgia this past this week and on Friday had his first Fall campaign visit to Iowa. He visited Ohio, not much, but has spent almost $7 million in advertising.

The big prize, Texas, could be a winning path for Biden as Democrats eye it again.

The states Biden must defend: Nevada and Minnesota

Nevada and Minnesota do not count for many electoral votes but still add up to the victory. Biden cannot take them for granted. Clinton won both of these states last time around and Biden is expected to win them now.

Not to forget: Two swing congressional districts: ME-2 and NE-2

Two small states, Maine and Nebraska, can set Biden’s defeat this election as they have made the unusual decision to allot some of their electoral votes to the winners in each congressional district in the state, unlike the other 48 states. Democrats have a safe side in one of Maine’s two districts, but Republicans have a lead in two of Nebraska’s three districts.
