Minnesota Senator Ilhan Omar on Wednesday lashed out at US President Donald Trump who went after her at a campaign rally reiterating comments about her not being American.

Addressing a rally crowd in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, the President had said, “She’s telling us how to run our country. How did you do where you came from? How was your country doing?” Trump asked.

Born in Somalia, Omar gained asylum in the US before becoming a naturalised US citizen in 2000.

She was quick to respond to the remarks.

“Firstly, this is my country & I am a member of the House that impeached you,” Omar shot back. “Secondly, I fled civil war when I was 8. An 8-year-old doesn’t run a country even though you run our country like one,” the Senator wrote on Twitter.

This is not the first time that Trump had targeted Omar. In 2019, he had asked four progressive Congresswomen who represents the “Squad”- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan — to “return” to the “crime-infested places” they came from. But of the four, only Omar was born outside the US.

Responding to this, Omar wrote on Twitter, “I am where I belong, at the people’s house and you’re just gonna have to deal,”

Omar will go up against Lacy Johnson in the upcoming election in November.
