The US Senate began hearing the final arguments on Saturday, the fifth day of the impeachment trial of Donald Trump. The final vote on whether to convict Trump for inciting the January 6 insurrection on the Capitol building will be conducted shortly.

The House impeachment managers have concluded their case with their final statements. Impeachment manager Joe Neguse said, “This trial is not borne from hatred, far from it. It’s borne from love of country, our country, our desire to maintain it, our desire to see America at its best.”

Earlier in the day, the Senate voted to call witnesses but after hours of discussions, they instead agreed to admit a witness statement into evidence.

Meanwhile, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would vote to acquit the former president of inciting the deadly assault on the Capitol.
