Almost a week after the violence at US Capitol that wreaked havoc in the legislature and America’s capital, two Congress members tested positive for coronavirus, reports AFP. One of the lawmakers on Tuesday accused Republicans of refusing to wear masks and mocked those who did during the riot at the Capitol last Wednesday.

Democrat Pramila Jayapal tweeted that she had taken a test after being trapped in a secure room with her fellow Congress members and added that she tested positive for the infection.

Jayapal, now in self-isolation, in a statement, said, “Many Republicans still refused to take the bare minimum COVID-19 precaution and simply wear a damn mask in a crowded room during a pandemic – creating a superspreader event on top of a domestic terrorist attack.”

Colleagues that refused to wear masks were guilty of “selfish idiocy” and should not be allowed to take their seats in the chamber, she added.

Hours before her statement, Democrat lawmaker Bonnie Watson said she has also contracted the COVID-19 disease and she added that she believes that she has been exposed to the virus during the riot at Capitol last week, reports AFP.

“She believes she was exposed during protective isolation in the U.S. Capitol building as a result of insurrectionist riots,” her office said in a statement.

Last weekend, top Congressional doctor Brian Monahan had warned that they could have been exposed to coronavirus after they took shelter in an isolation room on January 6 during the siege.

Congressman Jake LaTurner, hours after the US Capitol was sieged by pro-Trump protesters demanding to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in November 3 presidential election, tested positive for the virus.
