The United States of America recorded 210,000 new coronavirus cases and registered 2,900 plus deaths due to COVID-19 in 24-hours since Wednesday, reported AFP quoting Johns Hopkins University.

America is the worst affected country by the COVID-19 pandemic and has registered a total of 14,122,913 coronavirus cases since the inception of the pandemic in January. The country has also registered 276,148 COVID-19 related deaths, the most in the world.

Earlier on Thursday, President-elect Joe Biden had said that following his swearing-in on January 20, 2021, he would ask Americans to wear masks for 100 days to help reduce COVID-19 transmissions across the country. The 78-year-old said, “I’m going to ask the public for 100 days to mask. Just 100 days to mask — not forever.”

The Southern state of Texas currently has the most number of COVID-19 cases in the US, with 22,729 deaths and 252,523 active cases. The North-Eastern state of New York however has recorded the most number of COVID-19 related deaths in the country, as 34,829 people died from the disease. 

Globally, deaths recorded due to the COVID-19 crossed the 1.5 million mark on Thursday.
