Two people died after a US Navy training aircraft crashed near a residential neighbourhood in Alabama on Friday, authorities said. The jet took from Florida and crashed near the Montgomery Regional Airport, killing both crew members onboard. 

According to a report in The Guardian, Zach Harrell, a naval spokesperson, said both people in the T-6B Texan II training plane died. There were no injuries reported on the ground.

Joey Darby, the Foley city fire chief, said first responders encountered a “large volume of fire” with a house and a number of vehicles set ablaze. The firefighters were able to put a “quick stop on the fire”, he added. 

The jet crashed near the city of Mobile, which is close to Foley and the town of Magnolia Springs. The crash site was described as a “heavily populated” residential area by Darby. No firefighters were injured during the incident.

The United States’ Department of Defence, along with the Navy, are undertaking the investigation of the incident, Baldwin county sheriff’s office said.
