Authorities were called to the Michigan State University (MSU) East Lansing campus on Monday night (February 13, 2023) after three people were shot and died there, according to CNN. Michigan’s East Lansing requested an RTF.
The shooting, which was committed by an unidentified shooter, left at least five additional people hurt. The suspect was a 43-year-old male who had no connection to Michigan State University, according to Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief with the department of public safety.
Many Americans listened to the East Lansing police scanner on Monday night and into the early hours of Tuesday (February 14) to hear the latest developments in the MSU active shooter case.
In the US, owning and using scanners is allowed. You can listen to two-way calls thanks to their ability to intercept radio signals. The calls between police, fire departments, and other emergency agencies can therefore be overheard.

People who were following the active shooter situation at the university by listening to the East Lansing police scanner applauded the RTF’s efforts.
What is RTF?
An RTF is a police-operated rescue task force. When significant incidents occur at a scene that has not yet been secured by law enforcement or other agencies, they are called in to help Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals in rescuing injured patients or victims.

In the simplest form, they plan for the protection of victims in a serious occurrence. They were employed to assist students being attacked during the mass massacre at MSU in February.
The RTF is defined as “a temporary team of personnel consisting of a law enforcement element and an EMS element, whose primary mission is to enter the critical event scene in order to provide emergency medical care and evacuation,” according to the Albuquerque Police Department. This task force will be assembled on the spot with the troops on hand.
