A Jefferson County high school teacher, who was also a bus driver, was killed on Wednesday, January 25 on the school campus in what was described as a ‘bus incident’ by authorities.

The accident happened around 6:45 a.m. at Mortimer Jordan High School. It took place in the parking lot before the driver was supposed to run his route.

Where is Mortimer Jordan High School?

Mortimer Jordan High School is a public high school located in north Jefferson County in Kimberly, Alabama. Its exact address is 1920 Blue Devil Drive, Kimberly, Alabama 35091, United States.

Mortimer Jordan High School opened in 1920 and had its original campus in Morris, Alabama with merely ninety students. The property was directly adjacent to the city limits of Kimberly. In 2011, a brand new Mortimer High School was built on Bone Dry Road, approximately four miles away from the old site.

According to Superintendent Dr. Walter B. Gonsoulin, the staff member who was killed was a bus driver as well as a teacher for more than 20 years at Mortimer High School. “We ask for prayers for the victim’s family and the faculty and staff and student body of Mortimer Jordan‚’’ Gonsoulin said.

As per Gonsoulin, no student witnessed the accident happen, but one student was on campus at the time who saw the aftermath.

“As you can imagine this is a tight-knit community as a whole, a tight-knit faculty and staff as well,’’ Gonsoulin said, adding, “When you have a faculty member that passes away, it’s going to affect them. This is a time we all stick together as a family, we lean on each other,’’ he said. “We support the victim’s family.”

School officials have said that classes and all activities have been canceled for Wednesday and will resume on Thursday.
