Senator Bill Cassidy, on Monday, shared on Twitter that the White House gift shop has been selling a commemorative coin marking Donald Trump’s indictment and called it outrageous. Cassidy is a “gastroenterologist currently serving the people of Louisiana in the U.S. Senate”.

However, several users pointed out that the White House gift shop is a private enterprise and is not associated with the White House.

The shop website, which does not have a physical location, is really maintained by Anthony Giannini, a Trump supporter with no ties to the White House or the US government. The store sells fake Trump and Clinton 2016 campaign t-shirts, a onesie with a bear wearing a D.C. onesie on it, and the “President Donald Trump Trump Presidential Coin,” which is presently on sale for $13.95.

Giannini told Snopes in 2020 that he “is not affiliated with The White House, nor is The White House involved in any of our decisions, products, or operations.”

According to Giannini, the shop once had a tie to the White House, but he acquired control of it in 2012.

In Cassidy’s defense, the website does not specifically state that it is unrelated to the government. Cassidy isn’t the only politician to fall victim to the bogus website. Sen. Bernie Sanders was deceived by the site in 2020 when it began offering a “Trump Defeats Covid” coin.
