As crowds gathered to celebrate the Nuggets’ first NBA championship, authorities reported a mass shooting in downtown Denver left at least nine people injured.

Hours after the Denver Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat at the Ball Arena less than a mile away, police said that shots were fired from “multiple firearms” amid an incident involving numerous people.

According to authorities, the shooting was reported in the 2000 block of Market Street, close to 20th Street and Market Street. As seen on film, hundreds of fans had gathered at the crossroads and the streets nearby to celebrate the NBA championship.

Police instead speculated that drugs may have been involved in the shooting. Large sums of cash and “a significant quantity of fentanyl pills” were discovered nearby, according to Matt Clark, commander of the Denver Police Major Crimes Division.

Two males have been arrested in connection with the incident. Ricardo Vasquez, 22, is being detained on suspicion of drug possession and past offender possession of a firearm. According to Clark, Raoul Jones, 33, is being detained on suspicion of possessing a weapon while a felon. According to Clark, as the investigation goes on, more charges can be added.

Earlier, officers indicated a suspect they had taken into custody had been shot.

“We recognize it’s likely that the individuals who are responsible for … discharging the firearms downtown were also injured by gunfire,” Clark said.

Five weapons have been recovered so far, according to Clark. He said testing will be conducted on all of them to determine whether they were fired during the incident.

Of the nine people shot, five remain hospitalized, Denver Health Medical Center trauma surgeon Eric Campion said Tuesday. He believes all are currently in fair condition, he said.

“Our strong belief is that this is completely unassociated to the celebration,” Police Chief Ron Thomas said.

Yellow police tape sealed off the area overnight Tuesday as investigators scoured the scene, which was dotted with evidence markers and what appeared to be detritus left over from the celebrations, including an electric scooter and a green rental bike.
