Smart, a freshman at California Polytechnic State University, vanished on May 25, 1996. Flores was the person who was last seen with the 19-year-old. According to prosecutors, Flores killed her during an attempted rape in his dorm room. It was suspected that Flores’ father Ruben helped him dispose of Smart’s remains, which were allegedly buried in the backyard of his Arroyo Grande home. It was also said that he later dug her remains up to move them to another location.

However, authorities were unable to locate Smart’s remains. In 2002, she was declared legally dead. Flores’ 81-year-old father was charged with accessory.

Who is Angie Carrizel?

Flores’ ex-girlfriend Angie Carrizel took the stand on Aug. 25 to testify about a strange encounter she allegedly had in the backyard of Flores’ father Ruben’s home in the early 2000s.

Carrizel dated Flores for about two years. She testified that she had met Flores’ parents, Ruben and Susan, at their Arroyo Grande home. She recalled wanting to pick an avocado from the trees in the backyard but was asked to stay away from them.

“They did not want me there,” she testified.
