The situation at Gaza City’s primary medical facility, al-Shifa Hospital, has reached a critical juncture, with alarming casualties, including newborns, and a growing apprehension about the potential spread of diseases. Israeli forces are advancing toward the hospital, a development that has raised serious concerns among medical professionals and humanitarian observers.

The besiegement by Israel’s military has placed tremendous strain on al-Shifa Hospital, and medical staff inside the facility have reiterated their urgent need for fuel to power electricity generators. This lack of fuel is rendering them incapable of providing essential care and saving lives. Despite these pleas, Israel has shown no signs of relenting, asserting that the hospital is concealing a Hamas base.

The conflict has centered on a tightening circle around Gaza Strip’s largest hospital, where thousands of civilians have sought refuge amid the intensifying hostilities. The Israeli military, having entered the Strip in late October, has strategically encircled Gaza City, designating al-Shifa as its primary target in the ongoing battle for control over the northern region of the enclave.

Israel alleges that Hamas fighters have established an underground headquarters in tunnels beneath the hospital and are deliberately using patients as human shields—a claim vehemently denied by Hamas. The situation on Monday indicated that a considerable number of people had fled the hospital, yet a significant population remained trapped within its confines.

The Gaza Ministry of Health’s spokesperson, Ashraf al-Qudra, reported that at least 650 patients, in addition to hospital staff, are still present within al-Shifa. Compounding the crisis, an Israeli tank is stationed at the hospital gate, posing additional challenges for medical professionals attempting to navigate the complexities of providing care amid the conflict.
