Maryland Sheriff Charles Jenkins and local firearms dealer Robert Justin Krop in Fredrick County, Maryland, have been indicted on federal charges for their role in a scheme to illegally acquire machine guns and rent them to earn profits.

A federal grand jury indicted Jenkins and Krop on charges of conspiracy and false statement to purchase machine guns, the US Department of Justice said in a press release.

Krop, 36, is also charged with illegal possession of seven machine guns. He owns firearms-related businesses in the country.

The documents used to supply the guns, which were then rented to Krop’s customers. were drafted by Krop and signed by Jenkins.

Jenkins will continue to serve as Sheriff.

According to the indictment, from August 2015 and May 2022 Jenkins and Krop conspired to illegally acquire machine guns by faking documents on the sheriff’s office letterhead which requested guns for evaluation and demonstration for the office.

However, the guns were rented to Krop’s customers to benefit his business and earn some profits.

Who is Charles (Chuck) Jenkins?

Charles Jenkins was born and grew up in Frederick County, Maryland. He is one of the five children of Gordon and Joy Jenkins. He graduated from Frederick High School in 1974.

Before starting his law enforcement career in 1990, Jenkins worked in the communications satellite industry for 16 years. After completing his training at the Harford County Law Enforcement Training Academy, he worked in the Patrol Division for three years.

Jenkins became a criminal investigator in 1993 and closed several criminal investigations. He investigated a number of high-profile cases, specializing in homicide and death investigations and crimes against persons including sex crimes, child abuse, and sexual assault.

Jenkins was elected to the Office of Sheriff for Frederick County in November 2006.

Currently, he is serving in his third term as Sheriff. He is 56 years old.
