Charles Stuart, the suspect in a shooting incident on Interstate 80 in Omaha, appeared in Douglas County court on Wednesday. 

His bond was set at $1 million. Stuart is accused of second-degree assault, using a gun to commit a crime, and firing a gun without permission or with malicious intent.

Who is Charles Stuart?

Charles Stuart is 33 years old. He is accused of second-degree assault, use of a gun to commit a felony, and unlawful/intentional discharge of a firearm.

As per media reports, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia but was not taking medication. Following a collision and gunshot on the interstate on Monday that forced the closure of a portion of the road for several hours, Omaha Police detained Charles Stuart.

The proceedings were delayed by around one hour due to difficulties trying to enter the courtroom with Charles Stuart, the 33-year-old defendant. A crisis intervention team had to be called in to arrange for Stuart’s transportation after deputies reported that his conduct included weeping and throwing things.

Stuart was afterward dressed in constrained clothing, safely tied, put on a stretcher, and brought into the courtroom. When he arrived, he continually interrupted the judge, which caused disruptions to the proceedings.

The incident involving Stuart took place at roughly 11:30 a.m. when his red Chevy pickup struck a cement barrier close to the I-680/I-80 interchange, according to information released by the Omaha Police Department (OPD).

In a series of incidents, Stuart got out of his car, started to strip down, and then started shooting at oncoming cars. According to reports, one of Stuart’s shots struck a car, slightly hurting the driver.

OPD reported that Stuart was thought to be an active shooter along the freeway at a particular time. Eventually, police enforcement was able to capture him, which stabilized the situation.
