Democratic advisor David Axelrod cautioned that Green Party nominee Cornel West may hurt President Biden’s effort for re-election by luring voters away from the incumbent. By attracting voters in favor of the progressive scholar, West could end up helping former President Donald Trump, according to Axelrod.

Scholar and social activist Cornel West announced his candidacy for president back in June of this year.

Who is Cornel West?

Cornel West, a prominent left-wing activist, philosophy professor, and author, has announced his candidacy for the presidency in the upcoming 2024 elections. He is running as a candidate for the People’s Party, positioning himself as a populist alternative to the traditional two-party system that he has long criticized.

West’s campaign priorities include tackling poverty by advocating for a living wage, universal healthcare, and guaranteed housing. He also aims to address issues such as mass incarceration and climate change.

In his announcement video, West criticized the existing political landscape, condemning both Republicans and Democrats for their failure to address systemic issues. He highlighted the need for truth and transparency regarding matters such as the Ukraine war, the influence of Wall Street and Big Tech, and the actions of the Pentagon.

Having taught at prestigious institutions like Harvard and Yale, West is known for his advocacy of socialist ideas. He has often combined Christian principles with socialism in his work. During the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, West actively supported Democratic socialist candidate Bernie Sanders.

West has been a vocal critic of mainstream politicians on both ends of the political spectrum, considering them disconnected from the struggles of the working class. He has been particularly critical of former President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden, referring to the latter as a “neoliberal disaster.” West believes that identity politics has taken precedence over addressing the concerns of the working class.

As a third-party candidate, West’s campaign may face challenges, as such candidates historically receive minimal support in general elections. However, third-party candidates have been blamed for influencing election outcomes in the past. West’s impact on the 2024 election remains uncertain, as his name has not yet appeared in major polls.
