The suspect involved in the shootout at a 4S Ranch-area shopping center last week, which resulted in the serious injury of a police sergeant, has been publicly identified by authorities.

Who was Curtis Harris?

Curtis Harris, 46, allegedly engaged in a gun battle with a San Diego Police Department sergeant in a parking lot in North County, leading to his death, as reported by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident unfolded around 10 p.m. when the police received a report indicating that Harris, a resident of San Diego, was the subject of an unserved restraining order. Additionally, he was identified as a suspect in a vehicle theft and a domestic abuse case, according to information from the sheriff’s department.

Approximately 90 minutes later, officers located the purportedly stolen vehicle at 4S Commons Town Center. A plan was developed to serve the suspect with the court order. Jarjura, a lieutenant, explained, “The suspect was inside (a) Ralphs store. Some officers attempted to contact him, but he ran out of the store. Other officers were outside of the store and in the parking lot.”

Upon exiting the supermarket, Harris initiated gunfire, prompting officers to return fire, resulting in his death. During the exchange, a police sergeant was shot in the head. The injured officer underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, according to SDPD Chief David Nisleit.
