NYPD Sgt. Erik Duran has encountered suspension without pay after an incident in which he allegedly threw an object at a suspect who was attempting to evade the police while on a motorcycle.

The suspect in the incident has been identified as Eric Duprey. As per police reports, Duprey died on Wednesday night in the Bronx due to the injuries he sustained.

Who is Erik Duran?

Erik Duran is an NYPD sergeant. He was undercover when the incident happened on Wednesday at around 5:30 p.m. on Aqueduct Avenue West as the person was attempting to flee during a buy-and-bust sting operation. 

The crucial moment when Duprey tried to flee on a motorcycle along the sidewalk on Aqueduct Avenue was captured on surveillance tape. The impact of the object hurled at him during this attempt to flee caused him to lose control.

The person who launched the device at Duprey has been named by law enforcement as Sgt. Duran. Duran took part in a buy-and-bust operation in plainclothes with the aim of catching Duprey, 30, for his alleged participation in drug transactions.

Authorities claim that Eric Duprey recently sold drugs to an undercover cop and tried to run when law enforcement sought to capture him. Duprey reportedly fell and hit the ground with a head injury as a consequence of an undercover officer throwing a plastic cooler at his head during the pursuit.

The NYPD in a statement after the incident said, “The NYPD is committed to ensuring that there will be a full, thorough, and transparent investigation of this incident to determine the facts and to take the appropriate steps forward.”

The police authorities are still investigating the case and have assured the community to be transparent in the process.
