New York Representative George Santos found himself facing a slew of serious charges on Tuesday, as prosecutors filed a 23-count superseding indictment against the Republican in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The original indictment in May was already serious, featuring seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of making materially false statements to the United States House of Representatives. U.S. Attorney Breon Stacy Peace, in a statement, conveyed the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that Santos stands accused of identity theft and unauthorized credit card charges on the accounts of his own donors. Moreover, he allegedly deceived the FEC and, by extension, the public, regarding the financial condition of his campaign. The charges suggest that Santos manipulated campaign finances by inflating reported receipts with non-existent loans and contributions, some of which were fabricated or stolen, according to Peace.
