Joy Fox, a registered Democrat, is running for Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional district in Tuesday’s primary elections. Fox will be competing with Seth Magaziner and Omar Bah, who are considered to be frontrunners. 

With no incumbent for the Congressional district, the Republican primary ballot will only have Allan Fung, who is already projected to make it to the midterm ballot.

Who is Joy Fox?

Joy Fox was born and raised in Rhode Island’s town of Cranston. According to her campaign website, Fox attended the Edward S. Rhodes Elementary School and St. Paul’s School. She has four siblings, all of whom were born and raised in Rhode Island. 

A graduate of Rhode Island College, Joy Fox went on to build a career in journalism and communications. She became a reporter for the Cranston Herald and Providence Business News and an assignment editor for NBC10.

Before becoming a small business owner, Joy Fox was part of the government sector. She began her state service at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections. 

She later joined the office of Jim Langevin, who currently holds the 2nd Congressional district office of Rhode Island. Langevin decided against running for re-election this year, opening up the seat.

Joy Fox then worked with General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, who later become Rhode Island’s Governor and then the US Secretary for Commerce. According to her campaign website, Joy Fox worked to strengthen and sustain the state pension system while she worked with the former governor.

Joy Fox now leads the award-winning Clarendon Group, a small business advising public and private sector leaders, universities and non-profits. She also serves as Chair of the Board of the Sophia Academy, an all-girls middle school in Rhode Island’s capital city Providence.
