Police brutality against Black Americans have not been a new phenomenon in the American social and political discourse. In a recent news, protests broke out once again after a video surfaced showing brutal crimes against black American, Tyre Nichols. The five police officers accused are Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills, Jr, Emmitt Martin III, Justin Smith and Tadarrius Bean.

All five police officers were charged with second degree murder of Tyre Nichols. The given police brutality case is different than the previous ones as all the accused are black themselves.

Who is Justin Smith?

Justin Smith is one of the five police officers charged with Tyre Nichols’s death. Smith was hired by the Memphis Police Department in March 2018. Most of the police officers charged in this case have joined the police force recently and were allegedly part of an anti-violence unit.

Smith has posted his $250,000 bond on Thursday night, following which he was released from custody. Justin was fired from his job after the video was posted online showing him and the other four officers committing heinous acts against Nichols.

28-year-old Justin Smith was allegedly a member of Scorpion (Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighbourhood) in Memphis Police Department. He has been charged with second degree murder, two counts of official misconduct, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one count of official oppression, and one count of aggravated assault.

According to some unconfirmed reports, Smith is unmarried and a resident of Memphis, Tennessee. He was arrested on January 26, 2023. He was booked into the Shelby County Jail. According to their defence lawyer, none of the police officers intended to kill Tyre Nichols. However, all the officers were found guilty of official misconduct.
