The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department immediately arrested a 29-year-old Palmdale resident suspected of carrying out the shooting within 36 hours after the tragic murder of Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, which took place while he was in his patrol car.

The suspect has been identified as Kevin Salazar.

Who is Kevin Salazar?

Kevin Salazar is 29 years old. In a press conference held on Monday at the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station, Sheriff Robert Luna disclosed that Kevin Cataneo Salazar had been captured after a long standoff with Special Enforcement Bureau deputies at the suspect’s home in the 37700 block of Barrinson Street in Palmdale.

As per media reports, deputies asked Salazar’s family to leave the premises when they arrived at their home on Monday morning. Salazar decided to enclose himself inside.

In the ensuing confrontation, which lasted for several hours, SEB deputies put up much effort to diffuse the tension and convince Salazar to submit quietly. Non-lethal methods were used to get him to leave the premises when these attempts failed.

Sheriff Luna in a statement said, “Eventually, they deployed chemical agents and the suspect ultimately surrendered. Those special enforcement deputies took the time to try to de-escalate this and take this individual peacefully into custody when they knew that our deputy was not afforded the same opportunity.”

The dark gray Toyota Corolla thought to have been utilized in the Saturday shooting was found beside “numerous firearms” by investigators. While the Sheriff’s Department is quite sure that they have the correct person in custody, Luna underlined that they are still looking for any information from the public that can support the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office’s case.

Clinkunbroomer’s family also released a statement after the tragic incident. The statement read, “Our son Ryan was a dedicated, hardworking deputy sheriff who enjoyed working here at the Palmdale station. He was proud to work along the side of his partners that he considered brothers and sisters as he sacrificed daily to better the community that he served. Ryan made the ultimate sacrifice in doing so.”
