Admiral Lisa Franchetti has been chosen by President Joe Biden to lead the US Navy, potentially becoming the first woman to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Despite Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recommending Adm. Samuel Paparo, Biden’s decision recognizes Franchetti’s remarkable 38-year career as a commissioned officer and her current role as the Vice Chief of Naval Operations.

Born in 1964 in Rochester, New York, Franchetti’s journey into the Navy began when she joined the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. After her commissioning in 1985, she embarked on an impressive naval career, rising through the ranks and becoming the second woman to achieve the rank of four-star admiral in the U.S. Navy.

Her accomplishments continued as she held appointments as commander of United States Naval Forces Korea and commander of Carrier Strike Group 9 and Carrier Strike Group 15. She also served as chief of staff on the Joint Staff, J-5, Strategy, Plans, and Policy, further showcasing her expertise in both operational and policy arenas.

In April 2022, Franchetti’s nomination for Vice Chief of Naval Operations was confirmed by the Senate, and she assumed the position on September 2, 2022. Now, President Biden’s nomination for her to replace Michael M. Gilday as Chief of Naval Operations aims to make history, with Franchetti becoming the first female CNO and the first woman on the Joint Chiefs of Staff if approved.
