Maverick Vargo, a 25-year-old Pennsylvania man, was charged by a federal grand jury for threatening to kill House January 6 Committee Chair Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).

Vargo sent a letter to Thompson’s Capitol office last week threatening President Joe Biden, Thompson, Thompson’s family, and US District Court Judge Robert Mariani. Prosecutors said that the letter also had some white powder, alluding to “Anthrax.”

However, an investigation by the US Capitol Police Hazardous Material Response Team determined that the white powder accompanying the threats did not pose an immediate public safety hazard.

The Berwick resident is charged with threatening the president, sending interstate communications with a threat and influencing a federal official by threat, the US Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced.

Vargo could face up to 25 years in prison if he is convicted. He allegedly sent the letter from the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre.

The letter came ahead of the committee’s hearing, which may be the final one. The House committee is working to determine former President Donald Trump’s role in the Capitol attack.

Prosecutors said Vargas wrote to Thompson, “I’m going to kill you! I will make you feel the rest of our pain & suffering. There is nowhere or nobody who can keep you from me. I am going to kill you & those you love. I promise you that I will keep my promise until the day of my death.”

The last hearing was termed as “devastating” by Biden as new footage and testimony were provided. The president also stated that the committee had generally made an “overwhelming” case.

New information and testimony from former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson were presented at the House Select Committee’s final hearing before the midterm elections.
