Democrat Maxwell Frost has won in Florida’s 10th Congressional District, making him the first Gen Z member elected to Congress.

A member of Generation Z refers to those born after 1996. The average age of a House member is currently 58. 

The 25-year-old community organizer advocates for stronger gun control laws. He also supports progressive policies like Medicare-for-all.

Frost is succeeding Democrat Val Demings, who vacated the seat to run for Senate and challenged incumbent Marco Rubio.

“History was made tonight,” Frost tweeted. “We made history for Floridians, for Gen Z, and for everyone who believes we deserve a better future.”

Frost also aims to “transform our racist criminal justice system, and end the climate crisis.” He wants to “build toward a future without prison.” He supports decriminalizing sex work and marijuana use.

Who is Maxwell Frost?

Born Maxwell Alejandro Frost on January 17, 1997, he was adopted as an infant by a special education teacher, who migrated to the US in the Freedom Flights, and a musician.

Frost attended Osceola County School for the Arts in Orlando. He has also enrolled as a student at Valencia College.

Frost volunteered with the Newtown Action Alliance, an organization created in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. He has identified Occupy Wall Street, the Columbine High School massacre, the killing of Trayvon Martin, and the Orlando nightclub shooting as events that affected his thinking.

He was an active organizer with Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign. He also He later worked for Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, and Margaret Good. He was the national organizing director for March for Our Lives

Frost was formerly a pro-Palestine activist. He survived an incident of gun violence in Downtown Orlando in 2016.

In November 2021, he was arrested at a voting rights rally in Lafayette Square led by William Barber II and Ben Jealous.
