After completing 15 years of a 19-year sentence, Robert Chambers, 56, was freed from the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in New York on Tuesday. He was found guilty of running a heroin and cocaine business out of his Manhattan apartment.

His whereabouts after the release are unknown, although records indicate that he will be on parole until 2028.

Who is Robert Chambers?

Robert Emmet Chambers Jr. was born on September 25, 1966. He became known as the “Preppy Killer” and “Central Park Strangler” after strangling and killing 18-year-old Jennifer Levin in New York City’s Central Park on August 26, 1986. Despite being charged with second-degree murder at first, Chambers modified his story during the investigation, saying that Levin’s death was an accident brought on by her sexual attack on him, which he pushed away in self-defense. Chambers eventually entered a guilty plea to manslaughter after a jury deliberated for nine days without coming to a decision. He was the son of Robert Chambers, Sr. and Phyllis Chambers.

Chambers, 19, and Levin, 18, were part of the same upper-crust social circle that frequented hotspots like Studio 54 and Dorrian’s Red Hand Bar on East 84th Street.

The two had been intimate on two occasions, and Levin, who was college-bound, showed interest in having a serious relationship with Chambers, known for his reputation as a ladies’ man, fervent drug use, and involvement in petty theft.

After Levin told Chambers she felt the same way inside Dorrian’s on August 26, 1986, he escorted her to Central Park close to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with the aim of having sex. Levin battled for her life for three minutes, fiercely scratching and clawing Chambers, but for reasons still unclear, he suddenly grew aggressive and strangled her.
