Senator Susan Collins, known for her measured approach, made a lighthearted comment about donning a bikini in response to the Senate’s loosened dress code.

Who is Susan Collins?

Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Republican Party and Maines longest serving senator is often recognized for her measured and reserved demeanor. She made a playful and unexpected comment regarding her attire in response to the recent relaxation of the Senate’s dress code.

The remark came as a jest directed at Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who has been at the center of the dress code debate. Collins, with a touch of humor, stated to reporters that she planned to wear a bikini to the Senate floor, adding that her Democratic colleague, Senator Chris Coons from Delaware, would wear shorts, alluding to the newfound flexibility in the dress code.

However, Collins quickly clarified, “Obviously, I’m not going to wear a bikini. But the fact is, as I understand it, I could!”

The dress code adjustments, announced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) and informally termed the “Fetterman Rule,” were met with mixed reactions. Fetterman, who often sports casual attire, will no longer need to shout his votes from the Senate chamber’s doorway. He can now comfortably wear his customary baggy T-shirts, hoodies, and oversized shorts while participating in Senate proceedings.

Collins voiced her opposition to the dress code relaxation, asserting that it “debases the institution” and that maintaining a certain level of dignity in the Senate is essential.
