Val Demings, an American politician and a member of the Democratic Party, currently serves as the US representative from Florida’s 10th congressional district. She assumed office on January 3, 2017, at the age of 60 and her tenure ends on January 3, 2023. 

She is serving as a Democratic candidate in the 2022 United States Senate Election in Florida, which is scheduled for August 23, 2022. 

She was also the Democratic nominee to represent Florida’s 10th congressional district in Congress in both 2012 and 2016. In 2020, Val Deming was also one of the top contenders in the 2020 United States presidential election.

Who is Val Demings? 

Born in 1957, Val Demings spent her childhood in poverty. Her father was a Janitor and her mother worked as a maid and she was raised along with six other siblings. She earned a B.S. in criminology from Florida State University and an M.P.A. from Webster University in 1996. 

She started her first job as a social worker in Jacksonville and worked to protect foster children. In 1983, Val Demings moved to Orlando to join the police force. She worked as the chief of police and the commander of special operations with the Orlando Police Department for twenty-eight years. 

In 2007, Deming’s was appointed to serve as Orlando’s first female Chief of Police. She worked relentlessly during her tenure to launch various campaigns that could reduce violence and crime in Orlando.

Val Demings holds an honorary doctorate of laws from Bethune-Cookman University, as well as honorary doctorates from Florida Technical College and City College Fort Lauderdale. She is married to Jerry Demings, who was a mayor in Orange County, California

She is also the Chairperson of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Recovery and also a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
