The man who attacked Virginia Democratic congressman Gerry Connolly’s staff inside his office in Fairfax has been identified as 49-year-old Xuan Kha Tran Pham.

On Monday, May 15, at around 10:49 a.m., a guy walked into Representative Connolly’s district office. Two members of Congress’ staff were struck with a metal bat, suffering non-critical injuries. The assaults took place when Congressman Connolly was outside of the building.

The suspect, Xuan Kha Tran Pham, was detained by the Fairfax City Police Department as they arrived. It is currently unclear what he may have been trying to accomplish through the violent act.

Who is Xuan Kha Tran Pham?

Xuan Kha Tran Pham is the primary suspect in the attack on Congressman Gerry Connolly’s staff in his Fairfax office.

Xuan is a constituent from Connoly’s constituency who Connolly claims he does not know. Xuan caused significant damage throughout the Fairfax office, destroying computers and the glass of a conference room. “He was filled with out-of-control rage,” Connolly told CNN.

With a metal bat, Xuan Kha Tran Pham struck two of Connolly’s assistants. In addition to hitting an intern on her first day of work, the assailant also struck one senior aide in the head with a metal bat.

Connolly was attending a ribbon-cutting for a food pantry when the attacker drove to and entered his district office. The lawmaker calculates that it took police five minutes to react to the help-needed emergency call.

Now, Xuan is facing charges for one count of Aggravated Malicious Wounding and one count of Malicious Wounding.
