Billy Chemirmir was a convicted murderer accused of killing approximately two dozen elderly women and one man in North Texas.

Cause of death

Chemirmir was reportedly killed by his cellmate in a state prison. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice confirmed this incident, which occurred at the Coffield unit in Tennessee Colony, located about 85 miles southeast of Dallas.

His cellmate, serving a sentence for murder from Dallas County, was identified as the assailant. However, the cellmate’s name has not been released, and the Office of Inspector General is currently investigating the incident, with no further details available at this time.

The incident occurred amid a recent statewide lockdown of Texas’ 98 correctional facilities aimed at addressing an increase in dangerous contraband and violence within the prisons. The lockdown involves limitations on inmate movement and contact with individuals outside the facilities, as well as intensified searches to intercept contraband. While most facilities had resumed normal operations, the Coffield unit remained on lockdown as of the reported time.

Age

Chemirmir, aged 50, had been convicted by Dallas County juries the previous year for the 2018 murders of two women and had received two life sentences.

Victims

Chemirmir, a former senior-living caregiver, was suspected of beginning his series of killings in April 2016, primarily targeting elderly women, stealing their jewelry, and selling it to support himself. Many of the victims’ deaths initially appeared to be from natural causes.

Conviction and sentencing

He faced indictment on 22 capital murder charges, with 13 in Dallas County and nine in Collin County. Notably, the Collin County district attorney’s office had announced it would not seek the death penalty in his case.

Despite his convictions, Chemirmir had consistently maintained his innocence throughout the trials.
