Domingo Tavarez-Rodriguez, a North Carolina police officer, and his wife, Yenitza Arroyo Torres, were found by supervisors shot to death in their home after the officer failed to show up to work, authorities said.

According to Fayetteville Police Chief Kemberle Braden, police officials responded to the home of fellow officer Tavarez-Rodriguez on Friday when he didn’t report to work at 6 pm.

When he failed to report and his supervisors were unable to contact him by phone, that’s what prompted them to go by and check on him at his residence,” Braden said during a press briefing late Friday.

Domingo Tavarez-Rodriguez and his wife, Yenitza Arroyo Torres, both were found dead with gunshot wounds inside their home in the River Glen subdivision at about 6 PM.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has launched a criminal investigation, as the incident involves a Fayetteville officer.

Tavarez-Rodriguez joined the force in June 2021. His friends called him “Mingo”. He was 53 years old. He retired from the military before joining the Fayetteville Police Department.

Jason Torres, a friend said Domingo was a stand-up guy who always looked out for his family, friends, and soldiers. “I’m grateful to have been able to serve with him in the U.S. Army. He was a great squad leader to me,” he wrote on Facebook.

Domingo and Yenitza got married on October 13, 2022. The couple lived in a home on the 1300 block of Vanderberg Drive since 2017.

According to the police chief, the department was still probing the circumstances surrounding the death. A third party may have been involved in the incident or it may have been a murder-suicide. Family and friends shared their condolences on social media on Saturday.
