The New York City Police Department (NYPD) have arrested a suspect for the murder of the 19-year-old Burger King cashier Kristal Bayron Nieves last week in East Harlem.

The suspect, 30-year-old Winston Glynn, is facing various charges, including murder and robbery. Glynn was arrested on Thursday after police recovered video footage of the incident and identified the shooter.

According to the police, Glynn allegedly assaulted the restaurant manager and a customer with the butt of his firearm, before stealing $100 from the cash register and fatally shooting Bayron Nieves.

“The man demands more money from the register drawer. As Miss Bayron Nieves is scrambling to open the drawer, she doesn’t have the key. The male fires one shot, striking her and causing her death,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig on Friday.

After police recovered video footage of the fatal shooting, they tracked Glynn to a building on Patchen Avenue in Brooklyn and arrested the 30-year-old. Police personnel involved in the manhunt said that the arrest was the outcome of old school police work and new technology.

While Glynn’s clothes were non-descript and unidentifiable, police reportedly tracked him using the distinctive Guess belt he was wearing.

According to the police, Glynn reportedly worked at the same Burger King where Bayron Nieves worked, but that he had left by the time the 19-year-old had joined. Glynn has four prior arrests and was arrested last in 2020 on criminal weapon charges.

The Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, put out a statement after the arrest, saying, “I don’t come to press conferences of arrests, but this one was so personal. For a cold blooded killer to shoot a 19-year-old child after she complied,” adding that the problem of gun violence was attributable to “too many guns on our streets.”

Bayron Nieves’ family has been informed of Glynn’s arrest and the suspect is currently awaiting trial.
