American soccer player Megan Rapinoe and American-Israeli basketball player Sue Bird announced their engagement via social media platform Instagram on Friday. The two-time FIFA World Cup winner Rapinoe and the four time Women’s National Basketball Association champion Bird have been dating for more than three years now.

Bird made the announcement public by sharing a picture of her and Rapinoe, with the latter proposing the former down on one knee with a ring. Rapinoe,35, who is a two time women’s Ballon D’or winner has also guided US women’s soccer team to two World Cups  and a Olympic medal, while Bird has four-Olympic gold medals to her name.

Rapinoe has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and has clinched the spotlight through her campaign on equal pay.

Bird recently clinched the 2020 WNBA finals for her team Seattle Storm defeating Las Vegas Aces. Bird featured in only 11 games for her team in the 2019-2020 season due to a knee injury, putting in a strong show in the final.

Democratic US Presidential candidate Joe Biden congratulated the couple on their engagement, putting out a tweet saying, “Love will always win. Congratulations, Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe!

In July 2019, Rapinoe had been criticised by American President Donald Trump after she told a magazine that she would not go to the White House if the USA women’s team won the World Cup.

Rapinoe has also been extremely vocal in her criticism of police brutality and had expressed support for NFL’s Colin Kaepernick.
