A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Mexico’s central Pacific coast on Monday, killing at least one person and damaging buildings on the anniversary of the terrible 1985 and 2017 earthquakes.

The quake hit at 1:05 pm local time, according to the U.S. Geologic Survey, which had initially put the magnitude at 7.5. It was centered 37 kilometers southeast of Aquila near the boundary of Colima and Michoacan states and at a depth of 15.1 kilometers (9.4 miles).

A look at the five most powerful earthquakes to have struck the country – 

1. June 03, 1932 – An earthquake of magnitude 8.1 struck the west of Mexico in the wee hours on June 3, 1932. The towns of Colima and Guadalajara suffered significant damage and at least 400 deaths were caused in the country. 

2. July 28, 1957 – A magnitude 7.6 quake struck the nation at 8.40 am local time on July 28, 1957, killing between 54 and 160 people. Mexico City and Chilpancingo were badly affected by the quake, which also triggered a small tsunami warning.

3. September 19, 1985 – An earthquake of magnitude 8.0 struck Mexico City in the early morning of  September 19, causing serious damage to the Greater Mexico City area and resulting in the deaths of at least 5,000 people.

4. January 21, 2003 –  A 7.6 magnitude quake struck the Mexican state of Colima, resulting in 29 deaths and 300 injuries. Approximately 10,000 were left homeless following the quake, which was felt as far away as Mexico City and in the southern parts of the United States. 

5. September 19, 2017 – At least 370 people were killed after a strong magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the city of Puebla. More than 6,000 people were injured. The states of Puebla, Morelos and the Greater Mexico City area were badly affected.
