British politician Alistair Maclean Darling was a member of the Labour Party. Notably, from 2007 to 2010, he was the Chancellor of the Exchequer. From 1987 to 2015, Darling was a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Edinburgh South West constituency in the House of Commons.

After winning a seat in Parliament in 1987, he began his political career. Under Labour leaders Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, he held several shadow cabinet posts. Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Chief Secretary to the Treasury were two notable positions.

Gordon Brown named Darling Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2007. He held this position throughout the 2008 financial crisis, a difficult time in the history of the world economy. Many people praised Darling for his skillful handling of the crisis and his leadership of the UK’s economy during those tumultuous times.

Darling resigned as Chancellor after the Labour Party lost the 2010 general election. Up until 2015, when he decided not to run for reelection, he remained a member of Parliament. He was thereafter made Baron Darling of Roulanish and granted a life peerage.
