An Elk Grove police officer died in a wrong way highway crash on Friday, a department officer and California Highway Patrol said. The other person has been identified by the authorities. 

Jermaine Walton has been identified as the man involved in the crash that killed an Elk Grove officer.

Elk Grove Police Chief Timothy Albright talking to reporters confirmed the death of the sex-year veteran. 

“This is an incredibly sad day for the Elk Grove Police Department, for the Elk Grove community, for law enforcement. This morning, we lost a six-year veteran of the Elk Grove Police Department. Staff came to our officer’s aid immediately and incredible life-saving measures were attempted. Unfortunately, our officer succumbed to his injuries,” Albright said.

The incident took place early on Friday. Albright said that the officer was riding a motorcycle on his way to work when he was hit by a wrong-way driver on southbound Highway 99.

“One of our motor officers was involved in a collision on Hwy 99 near 12th Ave. The officer was transported to a local hospital,” the department had tweeted at the time.

A portion of southbound Highway 99 near 12th Avenue is temporarily shut down due to a crash.

The California Highway Patrol said the other car, a dark colored Dodge, involved was potentially a wrong way driver. The driver of the Dodge reported no significant injuries.
