European Union Chief Charles Michel condemned the attack perpetrated by several suspects in Central Vienna, Austria that killed two people and injured several more on Monday evening. He said that his thoughts were with the victims and the people of Vienna.

“Europe strongly condemns this cowardly act that violates life and our human values. My thoughts are with the victims and the people of Vienna in the wake of tonight’s horrific attack. We stand with Austria, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz,” Michel tweeted.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack and expressed his sadness and shock at the attack.

He tweeted, “We, French, share the shock and sadness of the Austrians after an attack in Vienna. After France, it is a friendly country that is under attack. This is our Europe. Our enemies need to know who they are dealing with. We won’t give in to anything.”

France has also witnessed two heinous attacks on its soil with the beheading of French teacher Samuel Paty and the killings of three more in Nice.

Germany’s foreign Ministry also condemned the attack calling it terrifying. The ministry added, “Terrifying and disturbing news from Vienna: Even though we don’t know the full extent of the terror yet, our thoughts are with the injured and victims at this difficult time. We will not give way to hatred which is aimed at dividing our societies.” 

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte also tweeted condemning the attack and added, “Firm condemnation of the attack that hit the city of Vienna. There is no room for hatred and violence in our common European home. Proximity to the Austrian people, the families of the victims and the injured.”

Earlier on Monday “Several suspects armed with rifles,” openly fired at multiple locations of Central Vienna, Austria, killing at least two people and wounding several more in what the Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz described as a “repulsive terror attack.” 

One of the gunmen was shot dead by the police while at least one more attacker was still at large. Vienna mayor Michael Ludwig told a local media outlet that 15 people had been taken to the hospital and seven of them were seriously injured. He also added that a second person had succumbed to her injuries.

Austrian chancellor Kurz condemned the attack and tweeted “we will never be intimidated by terrorism and we will fight this attack with all means”

He added, “”Our police will act decisively against the perpetrators of this repulsive terror attack.”
