Finnish diver Johanna Nordblad claimed a new under-ice horizontal dive world record by, spending two minutes and 42 seconds to cover a distance of 103 meters on Thursday. The 45-year-old diver achieved the record by swimming from one hole in the 60-centimetre-thick ice, in water temperatures of around two degrees Celsius, to another in the northern Finland’s Hossa region.

Her swimsuit covered only her torso and thighs, AFP reported. 

“Because we have this corona thing, all the swimming pools are closed, I can’t really train regularly, so I was much more nervous before diving (this time),” Nordblad told AFP. 

Underwater sports’ governing body CMAS (Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques) recently took over the measuring of under-water records, which was overseen by the Guinness World Records so far.

The previous record distance covered under ice, in a swimsuit and without fins, was set at 102.7 metres by Russia’s Ekaterina Nekrasova on March 6 this year.
